1967 was the first year for two models, a GT
350 & a GT 500. The new Mustang body grew enough from 1966 to hold a
bigger engine. Shelby replaced the stock Ford 390 used in the '67
Mustang with Ford's 428 Police Interceptor motor rated at 355
horsepower. The small block GT 350 pictured here is Eric
Brandenburg's.
It has Ford's infamous high performance (hipo)289. A real hot little
motor. Stock Ford rated the motor at 271 horsepower. The Shelby version
came with Tri-Y headers & an aluminum intake and was rated at 306
horsepower. This car has the straight Monte Carlo bar. |

John Dettori's 1967 Shelby GT350
pictured here is the Ford hipo 289 with an optional supercharger on it.
Note the aluminum bonnet over the carb in the center where the air
cleaner should go. This belt driven air pump would increase the
horsepower by 35% or more, taking the little 289 from 306 horsepower to
over 400 horses. Note the canister on the right of this pic. That is the
air intake for the supercharger. You can also see the blue supercharger
pump and John's Monte Carlo bar running across the engine compartment.
This bar was named Monte Carlo after the similar brace that was used to
strengthen the front ends of Falcons raced at Monte Carlo. Note the
curve in this bar to clear the supercharger.

This
motor is a 428 Police Interceptor from Ford. Used in the 1967 and early
1968 GT 500's. From the factory, like Jillian
Greenwood's GT 500 here, the cars came with TWO four barrel carbs
under an aluminum Cobra air cleaner. Note the Cobra aluminum valve
covers and the Ford blue engine block. Rated at 355 horsepower, this
motor probably developed closer to 400 horses. |

I have to show John
Huculak's GT 500 pictured to the left. This car has a Ford 427
engine. The 427 was listed as an engine option on the 67 GT 500. Few
cars actually got this motor from the factory. To be stock the engine
code would have to be "R". Regardless if its stock or not,
John's car has an awesome 427. Ford and Shelby American did not want to
warranty the 427, the 428 was chosen instead.
Note the curved Monte Carlo bar bent to clear the Cobra air cleaner.
Also notice the 427 emblem under the GT 500 Cobra emblem on the left. To
the right is a Terlingua
Racing Team patch. |
