Auto theft is the No. 1 property crime in America, costing more than
$8 billion a year. What's more, the FBI reports that auto theft is on
the increase.

No where is that more true than in California where vehicle theft has
surged from 210,000 cars stolen in 2001 to more than 227,000 in 2002.
California Highway Patrol Sgt. Mike Maskarich describes most car
thefts as transportation thefts. "They are stealing older cars and
using them to joyride, to commit other crimes, and to get from Point A
to Point B," he told Oakland's Tri-Valley Herald newspaper, noting
that many car thefts are crimes of opportunity. "People pull into a
convenience store, leave their keys in the car, come back, and it's
gone," Maskarich added.

Tips to protect your vehicle:

    * When you park the car, shut the windows and lock the doors.
    * Park in well-lit areas at night.
    * Don't leave electronics lying on the front seat.
    * Use a car alarm, wheel or brake lock, or other theft warning or
deterrent device.
