Shelby GT 500 vs Camero 396 hopped up race through Ontario Canada
Author: (more...)
Hi, my name is Jim Tatarnic. In 1969 I played professional hockey,
and finally could afford a new Shelby GT 500, Black Jade, with black
interior. I took it up to northern Ontario with my cousin to do some
fishing. After about 3weeks of great fishing outside of Long Lac,
Ontario we headed home. Travelling at night was great, no flashing
red lights to come up behind us. Just outside of Orangeville,
Ontario, which is about over an hours distance from Toronto, on
highway 10 I turned on to the highway, no traffic and about 3 A.M.
Just as we started the long drive to Toronto a 68 or 69 396 cu. in.
Camero, all punched up to race came from behind. He pulled up along
side of us in the Shelby, put his Camero in nutural and started
reving the daylights out of his machine. He pulled infront of me and
started to pull away. I turned to my cousin and said,'" I paid too
much money for this car for him to do that. Without thinking I pulled
over into the passing lane, and let the Shelby do the rest. As the
Camero seen me coming he tried to go faster. Not only did I pass
him,but I kept my foot on the gas and kept it there. The speedo
bottomed out but the Shelby just kept picking up speed, and feeling
the G forces push us back into the seats. All I seen in the rear
mirror was the Camero's headlights fade away in the night, and we
honestly made it to Toronto in less than 15 minutes. That was the
most satisfying Shelby triumph for me and my cousin. Check out the
distance between Toronto, Ontario, and Highway 87 on a map. Maybe
you"ll realize how fast and how far we went. Thanks. Jim T.
