My 66 Shelby... Part I
Author: Ken Garcia's 66 GT350...American Made (more...)
This is car #506 from the year 1966. I bought it from a guy in
Arizona. It was set up for drag racing (See photo). It is hard to
imagine it really being the same car. I could't even drive it on the
street. I had rock hard suspension, 5.?? to 1 gear ratio, the carb
was gutted and wouldn't even idle, no sway bars, slicks all the way
around, and no exhaust. Boy, was I in for a treat. At the time, I
thought I was getting a steal of a deal. I guess now I can say, I got
a fair deal. These cars are so hard to find and the prices are sky
high.
Some of the thing I have done since then, With the great help of my
friend, Tom Ruggeri (please see 65 mustangs in this site)and Superior Automotive:
-16" x 8" Vintage 45 rims with Goodrich 225's F, and 245's R.
-3.55/1 rear gear ratio
-5 leaf performance leafs rear with 600lb spring in the front.
-Front and rear swaybars
-relocated front upper A arms
-Glass pack exhaust exiting the side.
-1993 T5 transmission with the original shifter style.
(Tom now uses the C/R Top loader that was in my car)
-Eagle connecting rods.
-TRW Forged Pistons .040 over.
-Canton windage tray.
-.544 lift solid lifter cam
-World Windsor Jr. Heads, polished and ported
-Original Hipo Main Caps
-Melling high volume oil pump.
-Tri-Y headers
-Holley 750 Carb.
The whole motor was just rebuilt by Superior Automotive. I am still at at break-in stage, but the engine really roars. I still have the original parts which I now have stored.
These are great cars and a lot of blood, sweat and tears have gone
into mine. Thanks to Dennis for this site and being able to share the
info. If there are any questions, please feel free to email me.
All the best,
Ken
