How I got my 68 GT-350 - Dave DeTomasi

Author: Shelby Mustang List  (more...)

My dad purchased the GT-350 in the late 70's in Montreal from a
friend of his. Now my dad does not know much about cars or what he
bought. Before he brought the car back to MA, my cousin talked him
into doing some mods before he brought it back. The car was brought
to a shop where it had a new cam and dome pistons put it, basically a
rebuilt bottm end. The night before the car was to be picked up and
driven to MA, the garage was broken into and the Shelby along with a
Vette were stolen. My dad posted a reward for info as to where the
car was. My dad got a phone call 2 months later from someone he went
to school with. The car was believed to be in a chop shop in
Longueil, QU. The police were called and sure enough the car was
found in the garage along with many other Vettes, Mustangs, and
Camaros. The Shelby was in the process of being turned into a GT-500.
The engine and trans were on the floor sitting next to the car. The
only things changed on the car were the front springs to handle the
big block and the dash emblem. Also the car was stripped of its paint
and given 1 shot of red paint. My dad had the car towed back to MA
and put it in my Grandmother's garage. The car has been sitting
there for over 21 years on the ground. The engine and trans are in my
other garage. The car was left sitting on the ground and basically
forgotten. The interior is flawless and still intact and the body and
underneath are flawless, no rust or rot or dents. Of course the
suspension and brakes are just about junk at this point. My dad made
no effort nor had no desire to fix the car. I own 2 Mustangs and race
one of them. I do all my own work. I buy Mustngs, fix them and sell
them. I have put a car together using 2 parts cars, basically I love
working on them as my hobby. When my dad relized my passion for these
cars he recently told me "If you want to spend the money and bring
the car back to life then its yours." Happy birthday to me!! So I
have done some homework and wrote to some people and have found a guy
to help me out. This is my first project on an old car so I am a
little nervous because I don't want to make any mistakes. I plan on
starting with the suspension and brakes first, then onto the
drivetrain. I just wanted to share my story with everyone and I will
be giving updates of my project and also pictures. Anyone who could
give me any tips or help, please let me know.

Sincerly
